Vegan superfood powders: what to watch for on other labels
Plenty of superfood and greens powders look plant based on the front of the jar but are not vegan once you read the ingredient list. The usual ones:
- Whey or milk powder, added for protein or creaminess
- Collagen or gelatine, from cattle, pigs or fish
- Honey, bee pollen or royal jelly
- Vitamin D3, often made from lanolin (sheep's wool) unless the label says lichen
- Fish oil, in blends that add omega-3
- Carmine (colour 120), a red colour made from insects
If any of these appear, the powder is not vegan, whatever the front says.
